WHY YOUR HIP HURTS WHEN YOU SLEEP ON YOUR SIDE

Understanding the deeper patterns behind how the body looks, feels, and functions.

Hip pain when lying on your side is a very common complaint, especially among women over 35–40.

Hip pain when lying on your side is a very common complaint, especially among women over 35–40.

This type of pain is often related to inflammation in the tissues around the hip combined with imbalance in the muscles that support the joint. When you lie on your side, that area is compressed. If the tissues are already irritated or not well-supported, discomfort develops quickly.

Hormonal changes can also contribute. As estrogen levels shift, the body’s ability to regulate inflammation and maintain tissue resilience can change as well. This makes certain areas more sensitive to pressure.

Because the pain shows up during sleep, many people assume the issue is their mattress or pillow. While those factors can influence comfort, they are rarely the root cause.

The underlying issue is typically how the joint is being supported and how the surrounding tissues are functioning.

Improving muscle support and reducing irritation at the source allows the area to tolerate pressure more effectively, which often makes side sleeping comfortable again.
